Abandoned Blockbusters of America

During the 1990’s, Blockbuster was America’s go-to place for movie and game rentals. The aisles of movies and games and the bright blue and yellow branding is iconic.

At Blockbuster’s peak, they employed over 84,300 people worldwide including the 58,500 in the United States. Going into the 2000’s, Blockbuster began to struggle financially due to new competition from companies like Netflix and Redbox kiosks, leading to the company filing for bankruptcy in 2010. The following year, the remaining 1,700 stores were bought by Dish Network, a popular satellite television provider.

By 2013, all Blockbuster stores were closed worldwide except one, which is a privately-owned franchise based in Bend, Oregon. It is the last remaining Blockbuster in the world which has become a major tourist spot for those looking for a nostalgic experience.
