The Casablanca Inn was built in 1914 and was originally a boarding house for children and families and traveling salesmen. It was known to have a great reputation; and the owner ensured a pleasant stay with great food and cleanliness. Originally, the Casablanca Inn was called the “Matanzas Hotel,” because it overlooks the Matanzas Bay. It eventually was known as the “Bayfront Boarding House,” where many children resided. The women and operated this boarding house also operated it when it was finally known was the Casablanca Inn. She was struggling financially and got involved with the bootlegging industry and ended up making a lot of money. It is believed that this elderly women would go to the second floor and wave her lantern back and forth to the bootleggers towards the ocean when it wasn’t safe to come onto the shore. Several people have reported seeing a flashing light waving bath and forth as a warning to not get too close. People can still see this light even though the women is buried at Huguenot Cemetery. Staff and guests have also heard the sound of footsteps when no one is there. Others have reported a fog throughout the inn and in different spots.
